The concept of energy has fascinated mankind since prehistoric hunters held the first holistic healing conference over an open fire and cooked their hot meal for the day. Fire is a powerful representation of energy. Light and heat from fire provide mankind with the abilities to alter the qualities of the environment such as to warm the body or to provide additional ability to see into the darkness.

Oriental masters have created a complex philosophical system of energetic interactions in nature known as the five elements and eight attributes, based on an understanding of nature having male and female qualities.

Hawaiian philosophy also embraces the concept of pa lua or duality, and uses a similar description of kane (male) and wahine (female) polarities. Attributes such as hot or cold, wet or dry, darkness or light, strong, neutral or weak also contribute to the Hawaiian understanding of natural energy.

In our level three lomi coursework, we explore the different cultural and scientific understandings of energy. For example, we may practice meditation in a natural environment with a view of the ocean waves. We observe the peaks and troughs of the waves, and can feel the impact of energy when the wave crashes onto the shoreline. Some waves are bigger than others. We can also note the different lengths of times between waves. Last weeks’ waves may have traveled farther than the waves of today.

The importance of energy to the healer is based on the premise that the person who receives the healing experience requires an input of energy to initiate and to activate the process of healing. Visualize a “lighting of the torches” to help understand the impact of energy.
